The long road to 99 slaying
  • I began slaying at the beginning of the year I was level 66 this time last year. I was looking for a skill I could take to 99 that would be challenging, I tried a few out and when I went to my friend Snowsparkle1

  • Congrats Helen!!!
  • Ask anyone, I am not one to dredge up old posts, not even as a forum noob...

However, it is extremely difficult to find anyone who possesses a slayer cape. I am a member of the Slayer Guild, but I find that forum difficult to navigate and the topics are not really that interesting.

I, too, have decided to take Slayer to 99 for much the same reasons. I love the cape and the fact that it is probably the rarest one in the game.

I began seriously leveling at 71 a few months ago. I am currently, as of this post, 352K away from 94.

About three weeks ago I hit a block...

I used the blue chick (Chaldear) all the way up to 90. I switched to Duradel, but all I got was metal dragons. I hate metal dragons with a passion. I blocked them as they came up, but then I kept getting other tasks that required the use of pots that would not generate enough of a return on my investment.

So, I compromised and went to Sumona. Not bad, but I got about six lame assignments in a row. Really. Cave crawlers, basilisks, trolls, cave crawlers, trolls, cave crawlers and the last one was... Trolls. There are 159 of them currently waiting for me to systematically annihilate them.

Problem is, I also want the Prayer Cape. So, I've been camped at Pest Control for a few weeks and went from 84 prayer to 85 and am currently about 150K (give or take) from 86 Prayer. It has occurred to me that it will take me approximately forty-seven years to get to 99 Prayer with Pest Control, and my Slayer Goal is stagnant.

I am going to go back to slaying next week, when I get to 86 prayer. I still want to level my combat, but with Prayer and Summoning the only way there, and a low cash reserve (12 mil atm), I guess I'll sit at 135 and slay.

Anyhow, just wanna say a very belated gratz on what I think is the best cape in the game. Hopefully one day soon I can stand with you with my own..

  • As much as i hate slayer (and i really do as many will say here) when going to 85 from like 70ish I stuck with Sumona purely for the cannonable tasks.

I wouldn't say they're lame tasks. Trolls, use ice trolls with cannoning - an average task gives 16k slay xp, but also rune kites, and granite kites. Cave crawlers (22k average task) and basilisks (14k average task) are both easily cannonable and give reasonable xp for the time it takes to complete the tasks. Sure if you never want to get range xp then fair enough, otherwise with the slayer cave thing under pollyvwhatever it makes them all cannonable. The thing with cave crawlers and basilisks are they both drop lots of herbs. I can easily walk away with 5-10+ rannars per task. That well covers any prayer used, as well as stacks prayer for other tasks.

Yes she gives them a lot, but then I rarely have a task where I can't cannon which suited me. It also means that if i wanted to go down in world 2 and cannon them, it was always empty wink.gif

I PC'd a lot of my prayer, thankfully before the july update that hurt pc and it was hard going then, never mind now. But I kinda think, the time you spend doing that, you'd probably be better camping somewhere (whips, booties, gw) etc for the hope of a drop and just buy the prayer/summoning xp.
  • I hope it doesn't sound like I'm rubbing it in, but I have just bought 99 prayer; it took me 2/3 weeks from 70 to 99, this included making the cash using rune crafting and praying at my guilded alter. So perhaps make some cash and do it that way? I hear if you learn how to buy and sell at the ge you can make loads more cash than with any skill??

I never thought it possible, but I've actually started to enjoy slayer, but it's only because I don't have a goal to achieve! Watching the slow rate of progress is just too much for me!
  • The idea of the original article was to say that by slaying I also gained summoning, range and mage xps. The money I earned bought prayer xps too.I slayed again recently in a competition for a week and was reminded just how many charms can be collected this way.

I tend to be very easily bored and struggle to keep to just one thing but enjoyed the rhythm with slay. I only used Duradel (Lockwhatever) for the last 10 levels when I kept records. Some of the tasks I came to hate over time, but piety to make them go faster helped. I cannoned, potted and pietied anything I could, avoided dragons (though I would no longer avoid black ones since I discovered the baby ones in the chaos tunnels.

The great thing about the points system is that you can be picky and choosy over tasks. I would say if you are stuck on one you can't bear then don't do it!

Good luck with your goals Al.
  • Great advice, everyone, and thanks...

Cannonballing (lmao).. Well, I admit I used my cannon for several levels, but when I hit the 10m mark in cannonballs I stopped using it. Might do it again. Hell, I cannoned almost everything, even stuff that wasn't supposed to be cannonable, thanks to Axe Man Jack's guide.. I am not concerned about the Melee or Range XP, as I am maxed out in them, just want the XP in Slayer. Lol...

Before the "big update" I was a merchant. Lived and died in World 2. Literally. I got caught up in the Fally Massacre and was summarliy squashed at the east bank. LOL... At one point I had several hundred million, but was a level 94 with a total of 883 or something. When the GE update came out, I spent a good amount of it on skilling. I am down to my last 10 - 12 million, but I can earn more. Never merched at the GE, but I might join Clut's channel and see what that is all about.

Chemie - those of you who have a Slayer Cape are always an inspiration.

All good advice that will be chewed upon...

    Thanks, everyone..
