what does everyone think? the hardest skills to figure out... not necessarily the hardest to level, but the skills that require the most knowledge to master. the poll isn't limited to one answer.

This is a tough one, as most of them really are super simple - find something that gives a good xp/hour rating and then repeat till you're done. Attack, Strength, Defence, HP, Magic, Range, Pray, Summoning - they all fall under this category as the combat skills. Slayer is the same, you simply throw money at the problem and skip those tasks that gain you the least amount of xp/hour while still keeping points (and of course you put the most common fail tasks in your ignore list, not the ones you hate the most).

Herblore, construction, farm, smithing, firemaking and so forth - same deal, you throw money at it.

Keep on going like this, and the answer turns out quite clearly - they're all fairly easy to work out if you know the game well.

Now, if we put this in context a bit this might change a bit...

Would it be best to train... Attack along with slayer (from the beginning) or do it with slayer first and hit two birds with one stone? (Actually it's about 5 birds with one stone, but lets leave that aside for now) - all out of a sudden this question becomes much more interesting and now we have several skills that turn up with an answer like this and these proves to be fairly interesting. But figuring out a single skill and finding the best way (best being fast) is fairly easy IMO.

i can see your point... i just want to know what skills seem to require a better grasp of the game to master. if you just started playing yesterday, something like slayer might frustrate you, if you don't know the game well enough. i can remember doing slayer when it came out, back before i even knew tip sites existed, then i was given a certain task that i couldn't complete as i had no knowledge of how to access the monster.
  • Most skills require a pretty huge amount of information. I.e. A person training slayer needs to know that you need a facemask to slay dust devils, a herblorist needs to know that a crushed nest + clean toadflax + vial of water = saradomin brew (3), etc. But the more you play the game, the more easy it is to remember these things. It really depends on how much you use the skill. I could easily tell you what equipment and armor you need to wear for certain slayer tasks, how to get quick mage xp with gp profit, and so on, but when it comes to things like "what is the fastest way to get up farming" or "what items are needed for potions above level 70 herblore", I'm wandering in the dark for that one.

I mean, objectively, if you're looking at it from a "# amount of crap I need to remember/know for a skill" it could probably be herblore because there are a huge number of items/pots required for that skill plus what item goes with what item. Then again, most people stick to one or two pots if they're leveling. Hunter could be another one considering there are various ways you can train it (bird snaring, net traps, blahhh). Then again, it is a simple skill once you figure out what item catches what monster. And slay, like you said. You gotta know where blah monster is and what to use/what's effective.

    Location, location, location.

    tl;dr: It depends. Lols.

Edit: Herbalore in your poll sounds like a dinosaur. ^^
  • Magic - You're pretty much forced to use it to travel early on in order to prevent massive bordem and play the game. kinda make or break for new players.

Hunter/Summoning - the best thing to train with changes often making it kinda confusing to start.

Crafting/Herbalore - lots of different choices with these ones as well.

Farming - lots of data needed if you want to farm well. basic stuff- dont watch the crops grow, use/make super comp, etc. then the stuff i look up often: payments, growth times, and even patch locations (still)

Slayer - again, more data. Locations, tactics, who to see, what to wear, whether or not to use eyeshadow, etc.
  • I'm not sure that we really want to aim guides at the new player. Every update changes things, and keeping up with it is not what we're going to do. Leave that up to the pros at official fan sites. More interesting to our members, who seem to be mostly higher end players, would be how to do it faster, or cheaper, or how to make money instead of lose it, or lose the least amount. Fewer updates will have an effect on those types of guides. There are so many fan sites out there with all the in depth information on HOW to do it, what you need, etc, that looking at it from angles they don't would make more sense.
  • I voted for Hunter as to get any half decent XP for at least the first 50 levels you're changing quite often between what you hunt; and each is different. :)

this poll doesn't necessarily relate to certain things in the works... it is a general discussion/poll.
  • My bad.. thought we were discussing guides we were going to make!
  • I'd say slayer, as you need to know each monsters weakness in order to fight them. Once documented you are find but to start with it can be a real shock :-)
  • i voted for hunter, as it can be VERY boring, and has ALOT of different places you can go, Snow, Desert, Jungle, Volcanoes Islands etc going to different locations has variety, but confusing
