When playing RuneScape, chatting to friends and strangers, I often hear alot of ideas of how to make money. Likewise I also get alot of questions asking me "how do you make money?", "omg how do you get so rich?" and etc.
Here I will try to provide you with my thinking of the term money - because it is not just a number, it's a whole unit on its own!

What is money?
How to make money then?
Gambling it up
Summing it up
1. What is money?
Before even considering how to make money, the most relevant part has got to be to define what money is. By defining what it is, I'm not talking about defining it as "a common tradeable good used to measure every single items value in to avoid having to trade sharks for monkfish" - I want to define money as something a little more abstract.
You should have heard of the expression that says "time is money", and this is almost as close as we can get. Rember this: time is money.
2. How to make money then? As stated above, time is money, this is truly a valuable thing to remember. To give an example, player A wants to make a huge profit (please do not consider any of the in game XP in any of these calculations, this article is focusing on money making only). He decides to make yew longbows and alch them for profit. Because he is intending to make money, his plans will be the following:
Cut 1k yew logs
Collect 1k flax
Spin 1k flax
Mine 1k essence
Runecraft 1k essence into nature runes
Fletch it all into 1k bows
Alch 1k bows for a total profit of 768,000gp.
As said, time is money. The important thing to work out here is not that he is making 768,000gp over the entire process, but rather: how much money will Player A make over a defined time, for simplicity we'll use per hour.
I have got to admit, I have not actually done this test myself. I have tried cutting yews before, and they are very slow (yes, granted I'm low woodcutting), lets be kind here and assume that it'll take 1.5 hours to cut 1k yew logs. Next he needs to collect 1k flax; let's assume that this will take 1 hour. Next he will need to spin it all into flax, assuming this will take him 1 hour as well. The next step is mining 1k essence, this is a rather fast process and again let's stay kind and assume it will take him 0.5 hours. The runecrafting all depends on his runecrafting level, but assuming he's a mainstream RuneScape player, it will take him just about 0.5 hours. The fletching will take him just about 0.75 hours, and the alching is about 1 hour as well.
So summing it up:
1.5 hours to cut 1k yew logs
1.0 hour to collect 1k flax
1.0 hour to spin 1k flax
0.5 hours to mine 1k essence
0.5 hours to runecraft 1k essence into nature runes
0.75 hours to fletch it all into 1k bows
1.0 hour to alch 1k bows
This will all take him 5.25 hours to make 768,000gp, which is a gp/hour rate of just about 146,000gp/hour. Overall this process looks great! He won't loose any money at all, only gain; so what's so wrong with it?
Assuming again that player A is only after the money, he should pick whichever of these processes will actually earn him the most profit per hour (this is if we only look at this particular example, of course there are other potential ways of making money, like mining and etc).
At the moment yew logs are going for 396gp each in the Grand Exchange, assuming it will take 1.5 hours to cut 1k logs that's a gp/hour rate of 264,000gp/hour - already here we have a rate that's almost twice as much as doing the entire process! To take another of these processes as an example. Spinning the 1k flax into bowstrings. Bowstrings currently sell for 168gp each in the GE. One thing we have to remember here is though, that by looking at the profit for each process individually we have to take account for the cost of the flax as well, as a loss. Flax sells for 84gp each at the time of writing. So per flax spun into a bow string, player A is making 84gp profit. Assuming still that it will take him 1 hour to spin 1k flax into bow strings, that is a gp/hour rate of 84,000gp/hour - which is less than the entire process - from this we can draw the conclusion, that if you want to make money, spinning flax is not a good way of doing it!
Note: Please note that all of the above (except for the prices of the items on the GE) are estimates, the times may not represent how long it does actually take, and this is to show you how you can use very simple math to work out what will be your best way of making money, not to show you which way is the best.
2.1 Gambling it up All of the above showed how to make money with what I like to refer to as a "stable" way. Stable because you can, if you have the right data, perform math on it and come up with a quite accurate gp/hour rate. There is also another way of money which includes alot of luck. Here I am talking of depending on monster drops, or player killing. However these methods usually comes with both risks of dying, and just risks of comming out with negative profit (ie. loosing money).
Personally I really like this way of making money - however I have never tried to make X amount of gp using this method. As stated, this is gambling, you never know what you will get from it - and before trying any of this, it is crucial that you prepare yourself for the worst case scenario; What happens if you die and loose everything you brought with you? These are all things you will need to be prepared of before you try it, and personally I think this is something you should do for fun. Of course when you do get lucky it is great and everything is just awesome, but this is gambling and you will have to expect the worst situation to come up, sooner or later.
When I need a large amount of money, I normally work out how long it will take me through my stable way of making money and think of whether or not I think that is possible. I will also do gambling ways, but I will not depend on them in any way, and when I go I am prepared to die with what I bring, even though that sometimes adds up to several millions.
Summing it up
Making money is a science on its own, and there's many many ways of doing it. Here I have presented you with my take on it, how I think when I consider how to make money. Please note though that this article has only focused on the money making aspects of the game, and in a real situation you would add in experience as another factor, but - that is also a time factor, and in the end that is the true message of this entire article: You can (almost) convert everything to time, and that is the true unit if you want to progress.
I hope this article may have helped some - and feel free to comment on it.
Heh sieg, I think personally alot of people likes to come up with... well excuses saying "it's easy for you, you have this and this skill lvl this and that". Remember, I once came off tutorial island with every skill lvl 1 but hp at lvl 10. In my tottal rs career I have recieved a max of about 5m in gifts off people and I was well set even then. Ever since I was about lvl 80-90 I have been fairly rich as of my combat level - (before I started runecrafting too - I despised runecrafting for a very long time) - the why is the real question, IMO.
And ty for the tip... I think though I will leave it said as it is in the guide - mainly cause it makes more sense to me that way and I like to think it might make more sense to other people that doesn't have english as a first choice langauge.
As said in the article battle the amount of time i listed for completing each process were just estimates and I'm more than sure that WCing 1k yew logs takes way longer than what I used in the article. The point of the article was to show how you can apply simple math into a greater calculation to work out what will give you the better outcome.
There's several more aspects of this that are not covered here, that might be added in later, or maybe get an article on its own later. However do not take any of the data I listed here and apply them in your every day RS calculations - but rather take the methods of calculating it and apply those on some actual data (self gathered or listed elsewhere).
what about merchanting? Time might be money... but you aren't exactly investing much time when you merchant over the GE. M2 share your trade secrets!!!
One of my teachers introduced me to opportunity cost awhile back, and someone I knew made a guide like this.. I think it was to show how rcing gets the best $ so it would be worth paying to get to 91 because the return (1m+/hr) is worth the cost.
The reason I personally don't lvl up any of the skills that you grind to make money (that bring a better rate of cash) is because it brings a different aspect of the game and with my stats its easy to see that I merchanted to make money (could be gw, but I don't go there much).. sure having the skills would be nice but theres no challenge to it, plus its nice to know that you're draining money from the market.
Merchanting in ge be awesome... barely any time spent setting up trade and deal goes through when you're not even online most of the time. So.. I barely work for the money I earn (if you can call it earning), Id rather just spend time at cw or whatnot.
And if I shared my secrets then they wouldn't be secrets anymore ;o Though there isn't much to it, just typing in numbers. o.-
i personally dont believe that merchernters we're the bane of the econamy, though they could sometimes change the prices its more of the price minipulators then the merchs thenselves. i never doi merching because i dont find it fun, and i dont play a game i dont find fun. i never longed to have alot of money, i have 14M and thats only due to me collecting kingdom recources for months upon months now, when i get about 20M i may go buy guthans or somethin but meh. money for me never was a problem because i never needed it. i just get money in a slow steady approch. and i never spend so that also helps even more >.>
i dont find making money fun, because i dont like the grind.

This is true - but this was not meant to be a guide (and it is not, notice it is in the articles section). This is supposed to bring you my take on this subject and, it is a huge subject and I did leave out many many many options, some of which have been mentioned here.
This was not supposed to cover anything, or give any specific examples of what to do, but rather try to provide some tools for someone wanting money on how to work out what would be a good idea to do. Merchanting in the GE is all about picking the right items at the right prices at the right times and as you said doesn't require much time, and I feel that was beyond the perspective of this article to bring that up, as merchanting more needs a guide rather than tools.
Hehe kaare i was only commenting on something in your article... i did much enjoy reading this article and i totally agree with your approach. Just giving feedback on your point of view! nicely done.
The reason rune crafting is so good is that other people cannot interfere with the amount of cash you earn per hour. I moved from mining rune to rc for this reason. Also wood cutters and fishers will experience troughs in their money making depending on the time they log on. I used to make loads of cash cutting yews off-peak. It was around seriously about 70% less during peak times.

This is true, and well in many ways runecrafting is simply just the most stable money making method (even at todays prices of nats/laws and pure ess). However you are still influenced a little bit with how many people are logged on if you use a graahk to craft nature runes, as more people crafting with graahks means more confusion between who has which graahk and etc. However the influence is not as big as it is on, lets say woodcutting.
I agree with kaster no pain no gain choose a skill you like spend the time to lvl it so you can make fast cash mine is fishing i make 28k + every 6/8 minutes !

The graahk issues are easily solved with who was there first. If you were there first, and others come on top of you then your graahk will be the bottom one when you select the pile. If someone else was there, and you walk in on them, your graahk will be on the top.

True - but it adds to more shit you need to take care of - as I said it doesn't slow you by alot, but well at least in my case it does still slow me - and in runecrafting even a few seconds here and there counts
No pain no gain is right. I can already hear some of you laughing right now cause you know me but really.....merchanting is also hard work. It takes up time just like skilling does. I spent almost 5 years of merchanting and not doing any skills. Luckily I made enough to last the rest of RS career and pay for skills cause now that the trade balance went into action, I have no idea how to make money nowadays.
Green/Blue dragons are for the win, when you got no cash go there...all u need is a games necklace a whip/dscimmy and anti dragon shield ill make a Guide on it later when i got time
After skim-reading just about all posts, its time for mine!
Ok, merching/rc by far best money in the game.
Also, solo'ing graador/going to gwd/dk's/kbd and other monsters like that is also good.
The point I'm making is that merching an item(s) from the GE along with rc'ing is the best way to make cash. Only problem is that you gotta have a large amount of cash to start with. Also, you got to be patient and be willing to risk your cash. If you hold an item you're merching too long and it crashed, well you will probably lose out. Sell it at the right time and you can make millions in a few days. Along with rc making you money on the side. I have several items i'm merching right now (the names of which shall remain hidded) and this morning, I woke up and found that my net value had increased 4.2m.
Am sure you all know once you're 91 rc, making double natures using the Graahk rc method allowes you to craft 3.5k p ess an hour roughly = 7k nats = 1m profit an hour roughly.
GWD since the release of coinshare and graphics updates has become less profitable since the drop rates were made rarer (only affects cs/ls) Solo'ing is still just as good due to RoW.
Ok, to expand on my definition of "merchanting" there are two types:
1. GE merchanting 2. Rares/3a and other items in w2
1. GE Merching:
Simple. You buy an item(s) in the GE when you think they are going to go up, hold them for a few days, maybe more depending on increases, and then sell them for a profit.
2. W2 merching:
Time consuming, requires a lot of cash, also requires you to deal with junk (ags recommended to lend out and sell off junk) and thus can't rc on the side. Merching in w2 with rares means you're going to be dealing with a "street value" assigned to an item.
ie: 3rd age melee platelegs. GE value : 41.7m Street value: 200-300m
People sell them with junk for other 3a + cash or sell with a white/blue phat for cash. Street value also works the other way.
ie: Arcane/spectral sigil/shields. GE value : about 68m and 58m respectively Street value: 0m (worth pure junk)
Now, you're probably thinking "junk, what is it?" well, i'll explain. YES, junk is complicated! Who would have thought? lol Ok, there are two types of junk: Bulk junk and Stackable junk.
Bulk junk: anything that has a value of more than 1m in the GE and is impossible to sell.
ie: Spectral/Arcane shields, DFH, Phats, pumpkins/easter eggs, pvp armour, animal masks, holy elixir/bss just to name some.
Stackable junk: Small junk that has a low GE value and that can't be used to lend out with an item.
ie: Maple/Willow longbow(u), summoning pouches/scrolls, shards and other small unsellable stuff.
Everyone wants Stackable junk as junk if they must accept junk in the trade.
Anyway, I don't really want to reveal much more secrets about merching, you will have to learn them like myself. Above is the real basic stuff.
my take on money making... those who know how to make money should make money, and those who don't know shouldn't worry about it. i think if anything its more of trying to discover what works for you.
