Guide on getting 99 Smith
  • 99 Smithing

Currently there are less than 2100 RuneScape players who hold level 99 in the Smithing skill. Whilst not a hugely expensive skill, in comparison to some other buyable 99's, it can be laborious to get. It's a very nice skill to get 99 in, and is quite unique simply due to the low numbers of those who gain the right to wear the cape.

    Methods

    1. Smithing (Bars -> Items)
    2. Smelting (Ores -> Bars)

    1) Smithing:
Smithing, the action of making items from bars, is the fastest method of gaining experience in the Smithing skill. There is pretty much one acceptable speed route to getting 99 on bars, and that is platebodies. Ideally the maximum platebody that you can make is the one you should do. For most starting out these would be Mithril platebodies which are level 68 to make, then switching to Addy Platebodies at level 88.

For comparisons, current GE prices are used.
    Level whatever to 88

The current loss per Mithril plate is 2485 gp each, when alched. Taking an average level of 75, the loss to 88 is roughly 31.5m

Pretty much, unless you go down the junk route, you are looking at alching these plates. So time either when you get 88/99, or during making the plates, must be set aside to alch. Naturally if you don't have 99 mage, then alching is a good way to gain Magic XP, if you are 99, it kinda hurts a little image/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

    Level 88 to 99

Moving on to Adamantite plates at 88 drops the loss down quite a bit, as well as time, as Adamantite plates do sell on the GE. The loss on selling the plates work out at around 1631 each, or if you want to alch them, 1646.

The overall cost from 88 to 99 works out around 45.1m.

    2) Smelting:
The other acceptable method for 99 smith is to smelt Gold Ore into Bars (using goldsmith gauntlets). This makes the skill very AFK'able for large periods, allowing you to do other things.

Costs: From 75-99 you will have to smith a mammoth 210,392 bars of gold. Again using current GE prices, the estimated loss is 65.5m.

    Conclusion

You need to decide whether you value time over effort. A full action on ores, in a standard furnace takes roughly 1 minute 24 seconds to do 28 ores. A full action on making plates takes roughly 20 seconds on 5 plates (25 bars). (Action does not include banking time. Just time from choosing gold ore to smith, or choosing plates to make)

Time to compare experience. A full load of Gold ores (28), using goldsmith gauntlets, gives you 1,573.6 xp. A full load of Mithril bars (25) gives you 1250 xp, and a full load of Adamantite Bars give you 1562.5 xp.

Working on the times above the XP per second is:
    Gold Ores: 18.7xp
    Mithril plates: 65.7xp
    Addy Plates: 82.2xp
Addy plates come out on top, tho either platebody works out much faster xp per hour compared to Gold Ore (with gauntlets).

The fastest way to get 99 smith is to actually smith platebodies (mithril then adamant platebody) even though you lose roughly 11m more doing bodies over gold.

  • Do you recommend doing ores -> bars -> plates? Does it cost less or more and if less is the extra time worth it (Assuming you have no goal date to 99)?
  • Thank you! Your guide has been approved and has been moved to the Guides forum.
  • Well battle, smithing platebodies is actually the smarter way to go, despite being 11m more expensive... BECAAAUSE - It takes less time. "What?" I hear you say? Well, judging from what I read above (sxc guide there, Becca!! smile.gif ) in the time it takes to get 99 smith with gold bars in comparison to plates, you could easily make that 11m (and then some) by rc-ing, gwd-ing etc. So ya smile.gif
  • Thanks, very helpful!

    Appreciated.

Naturally if you have no goal date, then gold ore is an acceptable way to go. If you merely wish 99 smith ASAP, then you need to look at platebodies, but mithril, then addy when you can. Gold ore smithing is only reasonable in P2P as well. You need the goldsmith gauntlets otherwise it's a humongous loss, and double the ore made virtually.

My recommendation would be going down the platebody route, but then It's acceptable to me to pay the extra cash, for far less time spent smithing.

The losses are estimates, naturally, due to the fluctuation in prices of gold, gold bars, and mithril/addy bars. There are other ways to get 99 smithing, but the two ways i've covered are the universally acceptable methods for power leveling to 99. It's quite possible to find an item to make that you can sell for profit, gaining levels along the way.
  • What your saying is true mike, but if anyone else is like me (not as sexy...but you think the same) i hate being in the "hole" so to speak, spending more money than is neccesary=BAD even though you could make it back easy by using the extra time tongue.gif

    hawt guide bukit
  • What about the blast furnace? huh.gif and what about rune?
  • It's about power leveling, Blast furnace can be fast, but not as fast as plate bodies, and rune is simply not profitable since the GE came out. As I leveled through the rune items I checked bar costs/item costs, and didn't find anything. Not to mention that rune platebodies is level 99 to do.
  • It seemed you guys missed the fact battle (I believe) was asking whether it's better to make ores into bars, then into plates (I don't know what is in fact better)
  • Becca, you could easily to tell me to do this on my own -I'm not asking you to do any extra research, but do people often trade Gold Ores for Gold Bars and vice-versa? If you could find someone intrested in doing this then it would cost you nothing to use the ores to bars route, assuming they stick with you the whole way to 99. I know people used to do this (I'm not sure if they still do) with the ores necessary for Steel Bars, but I can't see as much of a reward for Gold Bars as for Steel Bars, since Steel Bars are used in Cannonballs. Once again, I'm not asking you to search the RuneScape forums for me, I can do that myself and I don't want to waste your time. I'm asking if you've seen/heard of people doing this in the past -and now with the GE. Thanks.

    Titan Zeus
  • I haven't seen it Titan, but the majority of my levels came on f2p where gold isn't anything more than to be mined to sell on ge to members. Also don't forget the price differences now, and trade limits. Gold ore far out prices gold bars too.

But cannonballs are slow. The list of things to make are endless, some make money, some don't. It was more just a way to show 2 clear ways to getting 99 smithing fairly fast. Powerleveling to 99 as such.

The thing about smith, you used to be able to switch to silly things like rune axes, slower, more profit tho before GE, but the GE has a knock on effect of every item. Most things you find in the GE have very little difference between making up, and selling the end product. For example Ores-bars. Bars-items. Before you could be guaranteed to make profit, now you struggle to find an item that you can do to cash in on skill wise.
  • i went down the gold route, smelting them on neitiznot (you can click bank from the furnace and vice versa), and working on homework/watching movies/anime (yay dualscreen)

it took a week or so to go from 80 odd to 99.. and back a year ago before the GE it cost me roughly 100m tongue.gif
